5 Essential Farming Tools to Make a Farmer’s Life EasierChris Beerman
The picturesque image of a farmer in overalls with only a hoe and a tractor by his side isn’t the reality we live in with modern farming.
Modern farming requires efficiency and productivity in order to keep up with large plots of land and demand for livestock and agriculture. Without the right tools, farms and farmland can quickly become unmanageable and, eventually, unusable.
If you’re looking to increase your productivity, make tasks easier and more efficient, and boost your farm’s yield and quality, we’ve compiled this list of 5 farming tools that will help.
1. ATV or UTV
An ATV or UTV isn’t just for fun on the trails (although, that is a nice bonus). These vehicles can attach to a trailer, which makes them perfect for transporting tools around the farm quickly and easily. You can also use it to transport firewood for the upcoming winter and in the coming spring for harvesting.
These vehicles are especially good for smaller farms, as the trailers that can attach have plenty of room, and these vehicles are easily manned and operated by single farmworkers.
Be sure to have supplies to get the vehicle ready for the coming winter: snow tires, wheel weights, and tire chains are essential.
2. Cow Milker Machine
If you have cows, an automatic milker can save you time and manpower. It might not be worth it if you only have one or two cows to milk, but if you work with many dairy cows on your farm, automatic milkers will make the process easier and free up farmers to work on other tasks.
3. Harvester Machine
While many agricultural harvesting seasons have passed in the spring and early autumn, it’s not too late to invest in a harvester machine to harvest late autumnal and winter vegetables like:
Automatic harvester machines make harvesting easier and more efficient.
4. Livestock Trailer
If you have livestock, a livestock trailer makes transporting them much easier. This is a necessary piece of equipment for people with larger animals like:
This will be especially helpful for taking care of livestock and cattle care in the winter.
Along with transporting livestock, you can use the trailer for other purposes like hauling heaving equipment, large amounts of firewood (can you tell we’re preparing you for a cold winter?), or even just for winter storage.
5. Winter Farming Tools
As autumn gets colder and fades into winter, you’re going to want to get some winter specific supplies. These include:
- Snow plows/blowers
- Fence repair supplies
- Digging bars for breaking up ice
- Winter clothes (socks, flannels, insulated longjohns, etc)
You’ll also want to take the time to winterize your machinery. Adding a snowplow to your pickup or ATV, snow tires, etc. Also make sure everything is accessible, fueled up, and up to date on parts so you won’t have a machine break on you in the dead of winter.
This is by no means a comprehensive list of essential farming tools. This will just give you a good idea of tools and machines that can help with a number of different aspects around the farm so you’ll get your money’s worth with each tool.
